February Wrap Up

This month I read quite a few books and really don’t know how I found the time. It all flew by too quickly but they always say time flies when you’re having fun! This month I read a shocking (to me) seven books. Those seven books were (drum roll please):

1. Helter Skelter: The Manson Murders
2. A Star Called Henry
3. Esme’s wish
4. The attempted read of Obsidian
5. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
6. All The Light There Was
7. Dancing at Lughnasa

I have noticed a major shift in my reading. I noticed I prefer more Irish Literature and True Crime. I am not complaining since I am expanding what I read but it amazes me to look back and see this shift. It is always good to look back and see where you started and where you are going. 🙂

Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil

“If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, ‘What’s your business?’ In Macon, they ask, ‘Where do you go to Church?’ In Augusta, they ask your grandmother’s maiden name. But in Savannah, the first question people ask you is ‘What would you like to drink?'”

This book encompasses the south in its whole in chapter 3. When she discusses having to d her makeup and watch her soaps while she drives one and a half hours away really strikes true because I couldn’t tell you how many women actually do that where I live.

It even goes on to explain how stuck in their ways Savannah is and it is true almost forty years later how stuck the south is. This book encompasses the south so well while going over the events that happened that fateful night. It is crazy to think that such a small book can tell a whole story the way it did.

I loved this book and I do not really know what else I can tell you without spoilers so this next piece will have spoilers.

First of all, this guy must be really friendly to go around meeting the people he did or they were very open to the idea of meeting new people even if they were stuck in their southern ways. Second, this man met a murderer who was the first person in history to get tried four times and was supposedly lying according to some of the people. Last, this book is amazing. I loved it!

Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders

“I haven’t decided yet what I am or who I am” -Charles Manson

This book took a while to get through. It was a slow read because of the fact that it is nonfiction and based completely on facts. I love true crime shows and movies but this is my first time reading a true crime novel. I can honestly say I enjoyed it and will be finding my next true crime fix.

One of the things that killed me about this story was the people. They were remorseless and seemed not to care that they killed someone! I also did not care for the final lawyer of Manson. He completely kept the trial going longer than it should have gone. These things made this case interesting and infuriating.

I recommend it to anyone who wants to know how the actual case went.
